A study conducted by researchers in Denmark came to the conclusion that fish oil that is taken during the pregnancy will lower the chances of children suffering from asthma.

Women that took fish oil in the last months of their pregnancy have lowered a lot the possibility of their kids having asthma in the future.

16.9% of the children whose mothers took pills of fish oil had asthma ‘till the age of three, while 23.7%  were the ones whose mothers were given the placebo. The 7% difference marks the risk of reduction by 31%.

The researchers are not ready to recommend a daily intake of fish oil just yet. The medication does not affect the mother or the baby, but there are already pretty high doses taken daily from foods.

Dr. Hans Bisgaard thinks that the research should be retaken and fish oil should be included in an earlier stage of the pregnancy. That way, the efficiency of fish oil will be better established.

Doctors are trying to find different ways to prevent or cure asthma, a disease that is very common. The chronic illness manifests through coughing, wheezing and breathing trouble.

In recent decades, the illness has spread more and in the USA over 6 million children are diagnosed with it. Worldwide,  there are about 330 million people suffering from the disease.

Bisgaard added that it won’t be possible to establish if eating fish during the pregnancy helps for real. Women are usually advised to eat only some kinds of fish, like tuna or swordfish.

On the research ran by Denmark took part 736 women. They took fish oil from the third semester of their pregnancy until one week after they gave birth. The children’s health was then tracked and until about the age of 7, the effect lasted.
