Despite the scandal of polluting emissions, Volkswagen managed to exceed Toyota and became the biggest global carmaker in 2016.

Japanese Toyota Motor, the largest automaker in the world by counting their sales in the last four years, was surpassed by its rival Volkswagen, during the first 11 months of this year.

So far, the analyzed data indicated that Toyota will lose in 2016 its first position in sales charts, as Kyodo transmitted.

In January-November 2016, Toyota’s global sales rose by 0.1% to 9,219 million units, while rival VW was facing with the scandal of polluting emissions, increased its sales by 3,1% to 9,379,000 vehicles.

Volkswagen Group recorded a significant advance in China, the largest car market in the world and Toyota reported a slight decline in the US, one of its main markets.

In November, Toyota’s global sales rose 2.2% to 873,000 units, due to increases in demand for the hybrid Prius in Japan and Europe, while Volkswagen sales increased by 7.9% to 899,000 vehicles, supported by an advance of 13.6% in the Chinese market.

Volkswagen was the subject of investigations in several countries after admitted to having equipped 11 million vehicles sold worldwide with a secret software that falsified test results regarding the emissions of diesel engines.

Toyota, along with divisions Hino Motors and Daihatsu Motor, would be expected to deliver 10.098 million cars this year and 10.114 million vehicles next year.

General Motors was the largest carmaker in the world for seven decades, being surpassed by Toyota in 2008. GM has become the worldwide leader again in 2011 when Toyota production has been affected by the earthquake and tsunami that devastated the northeast of Japan.

In 2012, however, Toyota group returned first and maintained its position in 2013 and 2014.
