The first group of 38 Afghan asylum seekers arrived Wednesday in Kabul from Frankfurt, marking the first repatriation of Afghans from Germany, under an agreement initiated by the governments from Berlin and Kabul in October, reports Reuters.

The asylum seekers were registered by the local officials from Kabul before their deployment in their areas of origin from Afghanistan.

In 2016, the Afghan community became the second largest group of asylum seekers in Germany after Syrians, according to the German Federal Bureau of Statistics (Destatis).

‘It was early morning and I was sleeping when four policemen came to my house and arrested me. I had no time to take my mobile phone, laptop and other clothes’, said one of the repatriated Afghans Nasiri Ali Madadi, who added that he lived three years in Germany.

The agreement reached by Germany and Afghanistan in October generated massive protests in several German cities in the last two weeks.

The human rights organizations are still debating if the Afghanistan became a safe country and under these circumstances the expelled asylum seekers might become the target of reprisals.

A spokesman for the Afghan Ministry for Refugees said that 10.000 Afghans have returned from Europe this year.

The next flight meant to repatriate a large group of asylum seekers from Germany is scheduled for early January.

Germany received 890.000 migrants last year, which caused major fears of internal security and concerns regarding the integration of persons.

The events generated the increase of the popularity involved in the the extreme right party ‘Alternative for Germany’.
