Explosion in a Moscow subway

At least seven people were injured in an explosion that lightened up the Moscow subway. The blast occurred in the passage of a station in the southern Russian capital, according to rferl.org.

The explosion had been caused by a gas leak. Some workers who were performing renovations in the passage station of Kolomenskaya did not respect the safety rules when they started to weld.

Consequently, a gas cylinder located in the passage blew up. Following the incident, a fire started, but it was quickly extinguished.

The passage was closed to civilian circulation and in it were only workers at the time of the explosion.

The gas cylinder exploded after handled incorrectly during some welding works, as announces Free Europe station.

Four of the injured were hospitalized, while the other three received medical care at the scene of the accident.

The circulation by the subway will return back to normal starting on Thursday, said the authorities.

The underground explosion produced in the Russian capital was captured by the camera attached to the dashboard of a car that was participating at traffic.

‘According to the preliminary information, the explosion occurred due to the careless handling of gas cylinders used for welding works’, stated the Russian police for the news portal.

Following the explosion, a fire started in an area of about five square meters. Emergencies service personnel managed to extinguish the fire quickly.

The Administration reported that the Moscow’s subway southern station, Kolomenskaya, which was closed after the explosion, will be soon reopened. The subway trains will continue in normal conditions, without any changes.

The blast occurred on Thursday, somewhere around 9:20 near the south station hall, exit to the street Nagatinskaya.
