Brazilian club Chapecoense was downgraded and fined by the Brazilian Football Federation (CBF) for not attending at their last game from the national championship with Atletico Mineiro, informs Mundo Deportivo.

The same sanction was also applied to Atletico Mineiro. The two teams will lose two points in the standings and will pay a fine of 28.000 euros.

The reaction of the Brazilian officials was the exact opposite of the one expressed by the South American football Confederation (CONMEBOL), which awarded the Copa Sudamericana trophy to the Chapecoense team, despite the fact the game was not held.

The trophy was handed to Chapecoense with the approval of Atletico Mineiro ‘as a posthumously homage brought to the victims’, after they lost nine players in the horrific plane crash from Colombia.

The plane carrying the Brazilian team Chapecoense to Colombia crashed with 77 people on board, 71 of them lost their lives.

19 victims of the crash were members of the Brazilian football team Chapecoense and others were part of the staff or journalists, says Mediafax.

Recently, Chapecoense has appointed a new coach.

The aircraft, a British Aerospace 146, owned by Bolivian airline Lamia, crashed about 50 kilometers from the Medellín airport José María Córdova.

The six survivors are three Brazilian football players from Chapecoense – Danilo, Alan Jackson Follmann and Ruschel, two crew members and a journalist. The plane took off from the Brazilian metropolis of Sao Paulo and made a stopover in Santa Cruz de la Sierra, Bolivia, before heading to Colombia.
