The latest study has shown that, in terms of recognition, the human face possesses the same feature as primates’ posterior.
Experts have carried out a study regarding the behavior of chimpanzees and came to an unexpected conclusion: the animals identify their mates by their posteriors, the same as people recognize each other by looking at someone’s face and noticing their own distinctive traits.
Researchers at Leiden University in Netherlands and Kyoto University in Japan stated that the human face has the same function as primates’ buttocks.

The research team suggested that both man’s faces and chimps’ buttocks have evolved in order to allow a better recognition of each other. The physical traits are being arranged in such a way that, by using minimal features, both the man and the chimp can make a quick identification.
In this research were analyzed five chimpanzees to whom the researchers have shown images of faces, buttocks and legs of other chimps.
Some images were displayed normally, while others were visualized upside down. Then, the images were replaced and the chimps had to associate the parts of the body with their fellow chimps.
During the test, the normal-oriented pictures of chimps’ posteriors were correctly identified. The monkeys made quick connections and identified the other chimps more rapidly by their posterior parts, rather than by their faces or feet.
Experts believe that humans surpassed this stage of evolution over time and developed the function to identify one another by looking at people’s faces and not at their buttocks.
