Usain Bolt and Simone Biles: Nominated ‘Champions of champions’ by L"Equipe

The Jamaican sprinter Usain Bolt and the American gymnast Simone Biles were nominated ‘champions of champions’ in 2016 by the editors of the prestigious French sports daily newspaper L’Equipe.

This is the fifth time that Bolt receives this distinction from the most important sports newspaper in the Hexagon. The Jamaican sportsman was also elected as the world’s best athlete in 2008, 2009, 2012 and 2015.

Usain Bolt, aged 30 years, won this year, during the Olympic Games in Rio, several Olympic awards in the 100 m, 200 m and 4×100 m, reaching a total of nine Olympic gold medals in three participations in the Olympic Games (Beijing 2008, London 2012 and Rio 2016).

‘It is a really a very important thing for me’, reacted Usain Bolt, 9 times Olympic champion and 11 times world champion at 100 m, 200 m and 4×100 m relay.

‘When you get to become the best athlete of the year, this represents a great payment for your work, for your efforts and for all the difficulties you managed to overcome. So, for me, to win for the 6th time is as important as winning for the first time’, added Usain Bolt, after he announced he will retire next year after the World Championships in London.

Simone Biles, aged 19, stunned the sports world at the Olympic Games in 2016, thanks to her four Olympic titles, won in the individual medley ground, jumping and teams. She also won the bronze medal on the beam.

The American gymnast, Simone Biles, follows her compatriot’s record, Serena Williams, winner of the ‘Champions of the champions’ award in 2015.
