China’s leadership is keeping very quiet as U.S. President Elect Donald Trump uses social media’s Twitter to antagonize the world’s biggest economy.
Trump tweeted this weekend, lashing out at China, that China stole the underwater drone from the U.S. Navy in what he calls an “unprecedented act”. The answer from Beijing was low key as China’s Daily’s English language edition says that Trump’s inexperience in world diplomacy might lead to a showdown between the two superpowers, while Global Times, which is a communist affiliated newspaper, outright mocked Trump.
“China has so far practiced restraint at Trump’s provocations as he’s yet to enter the White House,’ Global Times reported. “But this attitude won’t last too long after he officially becomes the U.S. president, were he still to treat China in the manner he tweeted today.”
Beijing seems to be holding back it’s reprisal so far, despite all the elements of the Chinese press and Donald Trump’s twitter outbursts and noise. This means they are in a prolonging stance of “strategic composure”, which came after Trump questioned the U.S.’s policy of diplomatically recognizing Beijing instead of Taiwan.
If Trump continues to openly challenge China on long held core interest issues like Taiwan, Tibet and the East and South Seas, China will “strike back firmly”, according to Shi Yinhong, director of the Center on American Studies at Renmin University in Beijing. They’re weapons will be recalling its ambassador, stopping international cooperation, fighting a trade war and it even may come to severing diplomatic ties.
“So far, China has adopted a cautious, measured approach of wait and see,” Shi said. “The government is still closely observing what Trump is up to and in the process of forming a clear view on his possible policy. This approach will like continue into his presidency for the first couple of months.”
