Jane Birkin, Hermes’ bags muse, turns 70-years-old

For Jane Birkin, English actress and singer who conquered Paris with her Boho Chic style, the time stood still.

She remained as beautiful as she was in her youth years, embodying the same rebellious spirit and nonconformist looks.

Although she reached 70-years-old, she still reveals the same charming appearance as Raquel Welch or Lauren Hutton, who reached the same age, according to the Spanish newspaper ABC.

This bold and bohemian London woman was born on December 14, 1946.

At only 17-years, Jane made her debut in the movie ‘Blow Up’, directed by Antonioni, appearing naked in some controversial scenes.

She began her relationship with musician John Barry, composer of one of the famous theme songs in James Bond movies, whom she married when she was only 19-years.

After her marriage failed and her daughter Kate died under mysterious circumstances, Jane moved to France where she met the famous artist Serge Gainsbourg.

She recorded in 1969, the controversial song ‘Je t’aime … moi non plus’, that brought her worldwide fame.

Jane conquered the world of music, theatre and fashion with her voice and her suave British accent, that stressed her innocence even more.

She quickly became the emblem of French fashion, turning into a real muse for designers and stylists. Her androgynous looks, long hair and beautiful legs created the so-called Boho Chic style, during the late 60s.

In 1971, she gave birth to her second daughter, Charlotte Gainsbourg, a nonconformist style inheritor of her parents.

Gainsbourg – the cursed poet with his hoarse voice – lived together with Jane for 12 years.

Jane’s style remained fresh and kept dominating the catwalks: her crocheted mini or maxi dresses; her baby doll skirts or straight high-waisted jeans, her knee-length boots or transparent dresses are the pieces of clothing that made her an iconic ageless diva.

Jean-Louis Dumas, the chairman of Hermes house, recounted the first time he met Jane Birkin.

When he asked her why she preferred raffia bags, Jane replied that no other bag was spacious enough to carry her girl’s milk bottles and her fashion magazines.

So, Jean-Louis adapted one of his bags with side pockets, creating the famous ‘Birkin’ bag which became overnight, the most desired bag in the world.
