Xiao Jiguo, a 30-year-old man from China is making a living as an Obama impersonator.
His facial features resemble those of the former president of the United States, Barack Obama.
Before becoming famous, Xiao Jiguo was a migrant worker in China’s Guangzhou, Guangdong Province and had been working as a waiter earning a modest salary. But things were about to change for him. In 2012, one of his friends uploaded a video of him singing. However, it wasn’t his voice that sparked Xiao`s success. Many people who watched the video recognized his resemblance with Obama thanks to the dark skin and curly hair Xiao Jiguo inherited from his parents.
Shortly thereafter, he made his television debut on a Chinese talent show in 2012 called the “Chinese Dream Show,” after which television and film producers recruited him to fulfill roles in various productions, including a Web-based sitcom about a man’s dating life.
While he has never met Obama, Xiao has watched many videos of Obama to learn his gestures, his expressions and even had minor plastic surgery done. He was also featured in a new ad campaign for the plastic surgery clinic in Guangzhou where he got the job done. In order to make his appearances more realistic Xiao also has been working on improving his English.
‘Many people have labeled him the Chinese Obama, but Xiao is more than that,’ said Xiao’s agent. ‘He has talent in acting. He can play a variety of roles if there are opportunities.’ he adds.
I’m happy to play Obama, but I hope my role is not limited to that’ Xiao said. ‘I’m a real actor now, and I should play whatever I want.’
