Mark Baumer was a 33-year-old environmentalist, who decided to walk barefoot across the country to raise awareness about the climate change.
On Saturday, the man was hit by a SUV and died.
He wanted to “save the earth” by walking across highways with no shoes on.
He started his trip last October. His goal was to raise funds for the FANG Collective. This organization holds resistance to the natural gas industry.
He also wanted to show how important it is to protect the environment in midst of the climate change.
He was on his 101 day of his journey when he got hit by the car. He was pronounced dead right at the death scene, which was on Highway 90.
Baumer was from Rhode Island. In 2011, he graduated from Brown University. He worked as a web specialist in a library.
He was a vegan and fought constantly for the climate change.
He wanted to continue his trip until May, when he wanted to get to California. By then, his goal was to raise $10,000.
After the news of his death and his story broke, people raised $2,000.
In 2010, he had another journey that lasted 81 days. The difference was that then he wore shoes. He also released a book called “I am a Road.”
In an interview with Vice, he revealed that he likes to walk on the white side of the highway, as it is smoother and makes his feet hurt less.
He posted several pictures of his feet on Instagram and he kept posting on his blog details of his trip.
Following his death, the foundation he supported, released a comment: “Mark was an amazingly compassionate, emphatic, humble, joyful, generous, mindful and caring person.”
