Besides the fact Russian hackers were able to engage in the electoral process of the Americans now, the intelligence services found out that they messed their entire electric network.

Journalists from Washington Post revealed that Russian hackers were able to break the grid in the United States, after an operation code associated with hacking “Grizzly Steppe” (n.r. “Grey Steppe”) appeared in in the system of their electric provider in Vermont.

Russian hackers have not used the code actively to stop operations, but penetration into the US electric grid represents a massive vulnerability for the US.

The electrical network is based on a complex system of computers and is regularly monitored by government employees and people in the industry because any disruption can have serious consequences for health services and emergency services. Thus, Burlington Electric company employees discovered a malicious code on a laptop that was not currently connected to the electricity grid in Vermont. The company said it took immediate action to isolate the PC and announced that federal authority.

Governor Peter Shumlin urged federal authorities “to conduct a full investigation into this incident and take measures to ensure that nothing similar ever happens again.”

“Residents of Vermont and all Americans should be alarmed and outraged that one of the world’s hooligans – Vladimir Putin – tried to get our electricity network, we rely heavily on to support quality of life, economy, health, and safety. This episode should draw attention to the urgent need for the federal executive to pursue vigorously and put an end to such interference from the Russians, “said Shumlin.

Also, Senator Patrick J. Leahy explained that hackers had tried to get the grid to cease the supply of energy in the middle of winter, which is a direct threat to the residents of Vermont.
