European Commission: ‘We have taken note of Amnesty International report’

The European Commission has responded to the criticism brought by Amnesty International.

Thus, in its latest report on anti-terrorist legislation in the member states of the European Union, Amnesty has harshly criticized some issues.

Consequently, in the daily press briefing, the spokesman of the Committee, Tove Ernst, has made his voice heard.

Therefore, he said that the EU executives have ‘took note’ of the ‘comprehensive’ report issued by Amnesty International.

But, unfortunately, he does not agree with the conclusions of the document.

‘Fundamental rights are not and must not be sacrificed to fight the terrorism in the EU. Terrorists attack the very fundamental rights and the measures related to the security must not reduce the standards in the protection’.

Affecting the European fundamental rights

The fundamental right is one of the pillars on which the European Union was built.

On the contrary, all security measures must be in a deep accordance with the principles of the EU: necessity, proportionality and legality.

The Commission does not share the view of Amnesty. According to them, that antiterrorist measures taken in EU are to endanger the fundamental rights.

The new anti-terrorism laws were introduced in several Member States of the European Union.

This happened as a consequence of the 2015 attacks, that undermined the fundamental rights and freedoms.

This statement can be found in the Amnesty International (AI) report, released on Tuesday and transmitted by DPA, AFP and Reuters.

The report analyzes the anti-terrorist laws adopted in the past two years in the 14 states of the Union.

Probably, it was meant to ‘set the alarm’ based on the fact that these laws have often strengthened the supervisory powers of governments. Also, one of the accusations was restricting the freedom of expression.

The document denounces terrorism and those laws have affected particularly foreigners, ethnic groups and religious minorities.

According to the same report, a growing number of countries have made easier the state of emergency. Also, they have granted special powers of the security services, with insufficient judicial supervision.
