The new HBO show, that stars Jude Law in the leading role, is the latest buzz. The odd series have another take on the church and the Pope.

This Pope is young, a bully, smokes and has a thirst for power. This image is totally different to the Vatican real life pope.

The show made its debut on January 15 and features Law’s bottom not once, but twice in the first five minutes.

A 47-year-old man, born in America, Lenny Belardo, becomes the head of the Catholic Church as Pope Pius XIII.

In the first episode, the pope starts by preparing for his first day. It starts with him taking a shower while his body is seen through the glass panel and then the scene continues with a full glimpse at his back side.

The character is like a breath of fresh air, breaking all the boundaries.

The series, that have ten total episodes, are directed and written by Paolo Sorrentino. His idea comes from his years in high school, where he had priests as teachers. “I was able to observe the solitude of those priests, and how much their lives were structured,” said the filmmaker.

The series are no only about the Catholic Church, but about the faith in general, about believing in a greater spirit or not.

“At the core of our series is its humanity. We penetrate the layers of curiosity and intrigue surrounding the very human institution of the Catholic Church, and explore how people interact within it,” said Jude Law.

As he was preparing for the role, Law did not observe only the history of the popes, but tried to understand his character, the young Lenny, who was an orphan. He tried to see his motivation for becoming a pope, he tried to see him as a human being and not a religious character.

The episodes air on HBO every Sunday at 9 PM.
