Philippine authorities announced on Wednesday morning that 158 detainees escaped during a Muslim insurgency attack upon a prison in the town of Kidapawan, Cotabato, at about 955 kilometers from the Manila metropolis.

Dozens of gunmen stormed the prison and engaged in a shootout with guards and prisoners, who literally disappeared during the chaos.

Peter Bunge, the warden of Amas, Kidapawan district, told the radio station that the group of armed men was led by a certain Commander Derbi.

The gunmen opened fire on his guards around 1.00 local time, killing an officer and wounding another one.

The so-called commander, apparently, is a member of the Islamist separatist group Moro Islamic Liberation Front.

Bunge also announced that six prisoners who escaped were killed and eight were captured.

This detention center is a former old school located in a forest area, and when the attack occurred, they were housing 1.511 inmates.

On February 3, 2007, an armed group attacked the same prison, freeing 49 prisoners, most of whom are high-level criminals.
