On Friday, a report from the US intelligence community says Vladimir Putin ran a “influence campaign” that led to Donald Trump being the next president. They claim the Russian president led this campaign to hurt Hillary Clinton and assure that Trump is winning.

Democratic individuals and groups were hacked by Russia. John Podesa, who was in charge of Clinton’s election campaign, was affected. The information was leaked by various sites, such as WikiLeakes.

This is the first official report coming from the intelligence community regarding the influence Russia had in the 2016 US election. There have been claims of a Russian involvement in the election before.

The community believes Putin’s goal was to denigrate Hillary Clinton’s image in the public eye. This definitely worked, as people have turned their backs on her because of speculations. Hillary was blamed for “leaked emails and accused her of corruption, poor physical and mental health, and ties to Islamic extremism.”

They further added that “Putin and the Russian Government developed a clear preference for President-elect Trump”.

Russia also wanted to determine the democratic order in US. According to the community, Russia used different ways: “intelligence operations — such as cyberactivity — with overt efforts by Russian government agencies, state-funded media, third-party intermediaries and paid social media users”.

In the last part of the election, when Clinton was definitely the one running the poles, they changed the approach and aimed at the validity of the results.

Aside from hacking, propaganda was used.

Clinton did declare that Putin got involved. This isn’t the first time Putin denigrates her image.

Trump did not say anything about the claims, although he did hint at a possibility.
