The elections for the presidency of the European Parliament seem more transparent than ever.

But, with an uncertain outcome, as VoteWatch specialists concluded after they have conducted a simulation the elections.

Because there is no coalition that would clearly determine a winner before the elections on Tuesday, each MEP will vote for one of the candidates.

The simulation is based on an analysis of each MEP’s opinion.

Also, it shows how they are congruent with the candidates’ opinions regarding the issues of the European Parliament’s mandate in progress.

Consequently, all MEPs have voted on 4,700 public policy issues.

But, analysts say that have used a similar method in the past and it was a major success.

For example, they were able to predict in December 2016 that Antonio Tajani was the candidate who was most likely to be the favorite at winning the European People’s Party presidency.

Predictions for the European Elections

According to VoteWatch, Tajani has an advantage over his main rival, Socialist Gianni Pittella.

But, Guy Verhofstadt, the candidate of the Alliance of Liberals and European Democrats could have won in front of Tajani. Probably, he would have made it to the second round by making a last minute alliance with the Socialists.

However, Verhofstadt lost the support of his colleagues from ALDE after an attempted alliance with the Eurosceptic Italian Movement 5Stars.

Therefore, the possibility that he receives strong support to propel him to the second round is very low.

The candidates of the two major groups in the EP, that are the Socialist representative Pittella and the popular Tajani, are the favorites of the race.

Only the withdrawal of one of them might leave a chance for Verhofstadt.
