President-elect of the United States, Donald Trump, nominated Robert Lighthizer for the US trade representative position at the Bureau for Trade Policy, said Tuesday in a statement made by his team of transition, informs Reuters.
Robert Lighthizer was deputy head of USTR during the term of former President Ronald Reagan in the 80s and played a major role in developing trade policies and the process of negotiating dozens of bilateral agreements, including in the steel and grain industries.
Subsequently, Lighthizer represented American clients in anti-dumping cases and called for free access to foreign markets mentioned in a biography posted on the website Skadden Arps law firm, where he is currently the partner.
As Trump’s trade representative, Lighthizer would play a key role in implementing tougher policies that could intensify tensions with China and other key trading partners of the United States.
However, he is unlikely to be the main architect of the commercial policy of Donald Trump, a role which, according to a spokesman for the transition team, would be acclaimed by billionaire investor Wilbur Ross, chosen by Trump as Secretary for Trade (Minister ), adds Reuters.
Reuters reminds that during the election campaign, Donald Trump has promised to renegotiate a number of international agreements such as NAFTA (the North American Free Trade, US-Canada-Mexico), and would penalize companies that transfer their business outside the US.
Later, the American President-elect has maintained this rhetoric and on Monday brought the feud on Twitter, criticizing China because they “removed massive amounts of money and goods in the US”, refusing to punish North Korea for its nuclear ambitions.
