Tragedy in Mexico: 32 deaths and 70 wounded

Multiple explosions occurred in the Mexican town of Tultepec, situated in the northern area of Mexico City, in a local market.

At least 31 people died during the series of blasts from Tuesday in the Mexican city of Tultepec, after the fireworks from a pop-up shop exploded.

France Presse quoted the statement made by the regional governor, Eruviel Avila.

‘26 people died instantly, while others died in hospital, raising the balance sheet to 31 deaths’, said Avila.

The number of injured victims has reached 70. Mexican president, Enrique Pena Nieto, transmitted his condolences to the families.

The incident took place around 2:50 p.m. local time. According to witnesses, shortly after the first blasts, a thick cloud of smoke rose above the local market and no one was able to see anything.

Multiple emergency and intervention teams rushed to the scene, struggling to rescue victims and to extinguish the violent fire.

Almost all 300 stands in Piazza San Pablito were destroyed.

City Tultepec is famous in Mexico for its impressive industry of pyrotechnics.

Every single year in Tupeltec, the administration of the city organizes national festivals dedicated to fireworks.

CNN published a video footage with the explosions, recorded by witnesses.

According to local authorities, the death toll could rise as many injured were transported to hospital in serious condition.

‘I hear very powerful blasts and saw a lot of smoke. I initially thought the gas station exploded, but then we realized that the blast occurred due to fireworks’, said an eyewitness.
