UN drops Wonder Woman campaign because of protests

UN’s Wonder Woman fight for women’s rights has prematurely ended because of protests, two months after nominating the superheroine as an honorific ambassador, reported Reuters on Tuesday.

A spokesman of the UN said that the role of the famous comic character will come to an end on Friday, despite the plans of using the image of Wonder Woman in a campaign promoting the rights of women and girls in 2017.

The withdrawal occurred after UN’s proposal has triggered harsh criticism worldwide. Almost 45,000 people signed an online petition that requested the General Secretary of UN, Ban Ki-moon, to reevaluate his decision.

‘Although the original creators may have thought of Wonder Woman as a strong woman, an independent warrior with an inspiring feminist message to tell, the reality is her image is that of a white woman with big tits and impossible body proportions’, was one of the complaints stated in the petition.

Wonder Woman, a heroine of DC Comics Inc., first appeared in comics in 1941, fighting bad guys, rescuing victims and uncovering evil plots.

DC Entertainment, the publisher of DC Comics, expressed its delight of using the image of Wonder Woman to reach UN’s objectives of creating equal opportunities for men and women and increasing the role of women until 2030.

‘Wonder Woman has been a symbol of peace, justice and equality and for 75 years she was a force that has motivated many and will continue to inspire many more, long after she ends her role as the honorific ambassador of the UN’, stated Courtney Simmons, from DC Entertainment.
