Nock-Ten Typhoon violently stroke the Philippines

At least 6 dead, 18 missing and numerous material damages: this is the balance caused by Nock-Ten typhoon in the Philippines.

The typhoon violently disrupted the Christmas holidays, as the government announced on Tuesday.

The storm, unusual for this season of the year, hit the archipelago on Sunday, wrecking everything in its path, eventually bypassing the capital Manila, reported the France Presse.

A ferry, MV Atlantic Starlight, sank in the province of Batangas, south of Manila. The accident caused the death of a person and other 18 missing, according to the coastguard. Five others died in the floods due to the falling objects caused by the strong winds.

The typhoon, which is named after a bird from Laos, was accompanied by winds of up to 235 km/h, according to the meteorological agency in the Philippines.

On Tuesday, several provinces were deprived of electricity.

More than 429,000 people were evacuated from their homes as a precaution measure and 330 domestic and international flights were canceled, authorities declared on Monday.

‘Many houses were damaged by the winds. Infrastructures, such as schools and hospitals were also affected. We are still waiting to find out the number of the destroyed houses, the extent of the damage’, said Mina Marasigan, spokesman for the National Council for Disaster Management.

Authorities initially feared that the typhoon will hit the capital and its surroundings, where 13 million people live. But the storm lost its intensity and spared Manila.

Normally, millions of Filipinos are traveling each year within the country to spend the holidays with their families.

Scientists estimated that the virulence of storms in recent years is due to the climate change.

In November 2013, 7,350 people were killed or disappeared during the Haiyan super typhoon, reminds AFP.
