Holiday season is one of the hardest times of the year for single persons.

If you’re part of them, here’s what psychologists advise you to do.

Every day, we delude ourselves that next year will be better, that we will not be alone anymore, that we will do different from what we did in the past and we will experience true happiness.

Each year, both women and men wait for the right one, for the right time, for the luck to come by their sides.

But what if all these fail to appear, the years pass by, the holidays come and go with an insane, chaotic and inexplicable ‘déjà vu’ and ‘deja connu’ feeling?

And then appears the eternal question: What’s wrong with me?

And yet…

It’s winter, there are Christmas carols everywhere, people decorate their houses and prepare surprises for their loved ones.

Suddenly you become more sensitive and sad, especially if you are alone and don’t have anyone to share your life with.

Loneliness is the biggest problem of mankind because we are all social beings and solitude can bring frustration, social withdrawal and isolation.

What can we do?

  • Focus on the present time, live every moment to the fullest and try to avoid the painful memories of the past. Find people you can help, so you can feel useful when you bring joy in the sad eyes of children or elderly.

  • Multiply those activities that make you happy: walks in the park, riding the bike, listening to your favorite music, reading, escaping to a mountain resort, thermal baths, sauna, massage, group games.

  • Enjoy short vacations or getaways. Or, allow yourself to go into a city break or even exotic destinations.

  • Focusing on the misery is a waste of your precious time and energy. Waiting for the right moment and the right time can make you lose sight of the essence of life. Living in the ‘now’ is the most important trick to living a happy life!

  • Focus on values, not on achieving material goods. Wisdom, joy, altruism and honesty are the lessons that make us better human beings.
