Pope Francis criticizes the media: ‘Misinformation is like coprophilia’

Pope Francis criticized all media organizations for focusing on scandals, public defamation and promoting false news as a means to discredit public figures.

Spreading false news is probably the greatest damage which media can bring.

Pope Francis has apologized for using terms that people might find repulsive.

‘I think the media should present things very clearly, very transparent, and not fall into – no offense – coprophilia – which means always focusing on scandals, reporting only bad things, even if they happen to be true’, said Pope Francis for Tertio publication.

‘And since people have a tendency towards coprophilia, more damage and loss can be made’, Pope Francis also added.

‘The means of mass communication face their own temptations, they may be tempted to use forms of defamation, especially in the political world’, stated Pope Francis.

‘The media can be used as a means of defamation. Nobody has the right to do so. It is a sin and is offensive’, concluded Pope Francis.

Misinformation is the biggest potential damage that media can cause, as Pope Francis affirmed, because it’s moving the public opinion in only one direction and it omits the other side of the truth, according to the Pontiff cited by repubblica.it.

This is not the first time when Pope Francis has expressed his point of view in an unusually rough language.

A year before he was elected as a Pope, he told the Italian newspaper La Stampa: ‘Journalists risk sometimes to be made guilty of coprophilia, a sin that rises a risk which tempts all men and all women: the tendency to focus on the negative rather than the positive.’
