Singapore tops the global education rankings

Finland and Estonia are among the best countries when it comes to the level of education in Europe, according to a new OECD ranking quoted by euronews.com.

Singapore occupies the first position worldwide in the PISA tests, comparing skills of 15-year-olds in key areas such as science, maths and reading.

Estonia is the leader in Europe in the science area, while Finland was ranked as the second, after testing more than 500.000 students in 72 countries.

The two countries, separated by the Gulf of Finland are also the best countries in Europe in mathematics, especially Switzerland.

When it comes to the ability to read Finland is ranked first followed by Ireland and Estonia.

Also, PISA discovered that girls are better than boys in reading but noticed an improvement in the overall results of the latter. The boys are way better in mathematics, but in nine countries girls have managed to be on top, including Finland, Albania and Georgia.

In the overall ranking, Bulgaria is lagging behind Romania, which received better scores in science. Romania is ,however, better in math.

The report is conducted by OECD – Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development.

Just like most Asian regions, Hong Kong and Macao managed to achieve high results in the education field.

The Asian education systems dominated the top 5 – accounting for the top seven places for maths, with Singapore followed by Hong Kong, Macao, Taiwan, Japan, China and South Korea.

The United Kingdom failed to make any significant improvements in the education measurement process.
