Obama to disable visitor registry for good before Trump can bring it back

After President-Elect Donald Trump made known his intention of resurrecting the national registry program for people arriving the U.S. from countries tied to terrorist organizations, Obama administration sprang into action and is trying to dismantle the program before it can be brought back to life.

This program, who has not been used since 2011, was created after the terrorist attacks of September 11^th 2001. Obama administration’s action is more a symbolic one than anything, trying to prove that they will not have anything to do with the many controversial plans and policies of the incoming Trump presidency.

This is one of the last actions taken by the current administration in the few weeks left in the White House, and it could affect the rollback of Obama’s immigration and climate change policies that the new Republican incumbent intends on enforcing after his inauguration.

The program, called the National Security Entry-Exit Registration System of Nseers has long been criticized by members of the intelligence community, especially from the Department of Homeland Security.

“D.H.S. ceased use of Nseers more than five years ago, after it was determined the program was redundant, inefficient and provided no increase in security,” said Neema Hakim, spokesman for the Department of Homeland Security.

Many higher-ups in the department believe the program outdated, with new measures that give much better results. “Information obtained from fingerprints, flight manifests, travel and identification documents and intelligence sources is more valuable in determining who poses a potential national security risk,” stated a custom and border control officer.
