Natalie Portman draws attention to gender discrimination in Hollywood

Natalie Portman, the winner of several Oscars, said that this discrimination thing is ‘crazy’ and said that, beyond the brilliance of the actresses on the red carpet, they are even more discriminated than the women that are working in other areas, according to an article published by Reuters.

A new wave of complaints regarding the gender discrimination of actresses who are less paid than men for a similar work occurred in Hollywood during the awards season.

Natalie Portman claimed in an interview that she was paid three times less than her colleague Ashton Kutcher for her role in the romantic comedy ‘No Strings Attached’, in 2011.

‘Compared with men, in most professions, women earn 80 cents on a dollar. In Hollywood, we gain 30 cents on a dollar’, said Natalie Portman.

Natalie, aged 35 years, winner of an Oscar in 2011 for her role in ‘Black Swan’, will be seen soon in the role of Jackie Kennedy, a biographic movie about the former First Lady of the United States.

The World Economic Forum, a non-profit organization, provides that it will take up to 170 years for gender discrimination to disappear worldwide.

The subject of actresses’ discrimination in Hollywood when it comes to money, entered the spotlights in 2015, when a series of documents belonging to Sony Pictures Studios have reached the press.

These documents indicated that actress Jennifer Lawrence was paid less than actors Christian Bale and Bradley Cooper, with whom she had starred in the comedy ‘American Hustle’ in 2013. Bale and Cooper have won 9% of the total profit made by the movie, while Lawrence received only 7%.

Jennifer Lawrence said that she was upset when she found out about this, considering that she ‘had failed as a negotiator’.

Also, other famous actresses, including Sandra Bullock and Jessica Chastain, accused Hollywood of discriminating them.
