Facebook will start to monetize the video content from within their social networks by displaying advertisements.

After more than two years of concentrating on increasing the quantity, but also the quality of video contents, Facebook will go to the next level: gaining money from such video content by displaying advertisements.

According to some anonymous industry sources, Facebook will soon begin to test displaying ads while a video is playing. These advertisements would be displayed after at least 20 seconds and only for videos that are over 90 seconds.

Facebook will share the revenue from this type of advertisements with the content creators. The latter will receive 55% of the revenue generated by the ads displayed in their videos. The same percentage is provided by Facebook’s main competitor regarding video contents, YouTube.

It is known that Mark Zuckerberg did not agree that Facebook displays pre-roll advertisements – the kind of advertisements that precede the videos. This approach fits the vision of the company’s leader and can prove very motivating for content creators.

Thus, content creators will be motivated to develop the quality of their contents. Without pre-roll ads, display ads during the clips will only occur if the user will watch at least 20 seconds of video. This condition would be satisfied only if the video has the necessary quality that will determine the user to not get bored in less than 20 seconds.

The was Facebook has defined displaying videos brought widespread controversy last year. According to the company, any run over 3 seconds was considered ‘watched’. This approach was misleading because, by default, Facebook automatically plays videos and the three seconds virtually guarantees the artificial displays.
