For the first time in more than 70 years, dating back from the period of the Second World War, Piccadilly Circus was left in complete darkness.

The giant bright advertisements from the famous market of London, Piccadilly Circus, were stopped. This happened for the first time over the last century.

The interruption lasted for a longer period of time due to some replacement works, according to Reuters.

The six screens are placed on the walls of buildings located near Piccadilly Circus in the center of London.

Consequently, they will be removed and replaced with a single and gigantic curved screen. The new screen will be inaugurated in the autumn of 2017.

In addition, besides the usually displayed commercials, the new HD screen will present other things, too. For example, weather information, traffic data and last recorded results from the major sports competitions.

So, the newest advertising space in London’s most famous intersection will be split between six major companies.

For example, Coca-Cola will be one of them. The giant beverage company has been holding a permanent advertising in this space for 62 years.

The first illuminated advertisement of Perrier mineral water was displayed at Piccadilly Circus in 1908.

In the bloody years of World War II, from 1939 to 1945, the advertising lights were off as a measure to protect London from the German bombers.

Then, the ads in Piccadilly Circus remained lit constantly, from 1949 to the present time.

But, the permanent lightning had two exceptions or small blackouts.

The times when the lights at Picadilly Circus went off happened at the funeral of Winston Churchill (1965) and Princess Diana (1997).

On the occasion of this interruption, it is the first time that the famous intersection will remain unlighted for a longer period of time.
