WikiLeaks to publish personal information

Users of Twitter might get in some trouble following WikiLeaks’ declaration about publishing personal information. The users are already verified by Twitter. The thousands of people featured are not happy about this.

A Twitter account featured to the group declared about this matter. The database can include information such as finances and family relationships. “We are thinking of making an online database with all ‘verified’ twitter accounts & their family/job/financial/housing relationships,” said the post.

Kevin Collier, journalist, was told by the company that what it wants is to “develop a metric to understand influence networks based on proximity graphs.”

Twitter responded and said that this is a violation of their rules. The company verified about 237,000 accounts that are now marked with a blue check mark. The verification takes place so that they ensure the persons are real. Back in 2009, celebrities complained about false accounts using their name. The verification only applies to accounts that have a public interest.

WikiLeaks defended its decision, saying that sites like Wikipedia or LinkedIn already do that. It wants to publish relationships that influence, not addresses.

This is not the first time WikiLeaks has done something like this. They have published personal information in the past, such as social security numbers.

Users are not happy about this and have blasted the organization on Twitter.

“I think this plan is creepy, I think you’re creepy and I hope someone breaks into your house and rearranges your sofa cushions”, said one user.

People hope that this will not happen and their private lives will remain intact.
