The European Parliament (EP) adopted on Thursday a resolution, which requires the temporary suspension of the negotiations with Turkey, due to ‘disproportionate’ reaction of the Administration of Ankara, after the attempted coup in July, but most likely the governments of the EU states will not support such a decision, reports Reuters and AFP.

A significant majority of the MEP’s voted in the favor of the resolution, which is not binding and requesting the European Commission and national governments to freeze the ongoing negotiations between Turkey and the European Union.

Despite the fact the vote of the MEP’s is not a mandatory aspect, the resolution will trigger major tension between the Ankara Administration and EU.

The decision was set to be adopted today by the MEP’s, regarding the potential suspension of the negotiations with Turkey.

The members of Parliament may enact laws with the Members States, but they do not have the necessary power to change the foreign policy matters.
