Espresso coffee capsules were banned by the authorities from Hamburg, Germany. The decision was adopted after the experts discovered the fact these capsules are not respecting the sustainability standards.
According to the German specialists, these capsules are creating an unnecessary waste and they also contain aluminum, reports CNN and New York Times.
An official from the local administration said that coffee capsules contain 6g of coffee in 3g of packaging of pure coffee.
In addition, the authorities are not targeting only the content from these capsules, they are also analyzing the plastic plates, plastic water bottles, juice cans, some cleaning products and certain types of paints.
‘Our objective is to grow the market share of environmentally friendly products in an attempt to combat climate change’, said Sen. Jens Kerstan.
Coffee capsules have gained a significant popularity all over the world. Euromonitor said that these products had a ‘tremendous growth’ and they represent an important growth factor in the U.S market. More than a quarter of households in the States own an espresso coffee machine, that works with these capsules.
According to BBC, Germany recycles these capsules to make components for the automotive industry.
‘We are frequently asked whether individual portions and the use of aluminum contradict sustainability – in our opinion, the opposite is the case’, said a Nespresso representative.
Two billion cups of coffee are drunk around the world every day and 25 million families rely on growing coffee for a living.
