The technology has raised a shocking problem all over the world – users stopped being attentive to the road and this lack of attention has caused frequent collisions into each other.
But a research team in Singapore believes that the answer lays in the invention of a scooter that is programmed to drive itself.
According to its inventors, this ingenious machine could prevent dreamy and inattentive travelers from crashing each other. The four-wheeled vehicle reaches a speed of 6 km/h and it’s specially designed to avoid obstacles.
National University of Singapore (NUS) is the main engine of designing this experimental scooter and its ambition to design driverless machines pushes the humanity one step closer to autonomous technology.
The scooter successfully passed all the tests and its developers said this is an opportunity to limit the usage of cars in order to diminish accident rates.
‘I’m sure you have experienced people who just use their smartphone while walking and almost run into you… So it would be nice if you are just sitting down and checking your emails’, said NUS Associate Professor and project leader Marcelo Ang Jr.
Ang Jr mentioned that the self-driving scooter could simultaneously operate on the roads with other driverless machines without interfering each other’s course.
For now, the scooter automatically chooses a new route the moment it faces an obstacle, but the process may take a few seconds. The research team is currently working to improve the operation time.
