The Facebook officials confirmed through a blog post, what some advertising companies already knew.
Blaming the entire misunderstanding on a programming bug, Facebook admitted the miscalculation of the impression numbers reported by some of the systems responsible for the evaluation of the advertisements displayed on the social networking pages.
‘We discovered a bug in the Page Insights functioning system. One of the dashboards presented a propagate summary of pages in an interval of 7 days and 28 days and it was erroneously calculated as the sum of its daily impressions, without removing the resulting figures representing the impressions visits repeated by visitors.’
‘Thus, after the de-duplication of the impression summary for 7 days will be lower by 33% or 55% lower after taking into account the interval of 28 days. The found bug was active since May 2016 and will be corrected in the upcoming weeks.’, reported the officials of the social platform.
This is Facebook’s first ‘omission’ of this kind, the company admitting an erroneous calculation of impressions for videos. In some cases, the social network reported impression figures with 60% -80% more than in reality.
According to The Guardian, Facebook is facing calls for greater transparency and oversight after admitting widespread errors in the way it measures advertising activity, as the social media company finds itself under increased pressure to clean up its act over a number of issues including distributing ‘fake news’.
