Tennis arena ‘Louis Armstrong’ was demolished

The most famous tennis arena in the world, which hosted the annual matches of the US Open, was demolished.

The location will become a new and improved arena in the next two years.

The refurbishing of the complex from Flushing Meadows is scheduled to end in 2018. The arena represents an iconic symbol for this sport since its inauguration in 1964, reports Tennis World USA.

The former central field of the last Grand Slam tournament replaced with the ‘Arthur Ashe’ arena inaugurated in 1992, ‘Louis Armstrong’ has a capacity of 18,000 seats. For many years, the tennis arena was the largest of its kind.

The popular stadium was named after the famous American musician, who lived near this complex until he died in 1997.

‘Louis Armstrong’ will be replaced by a new stadium with a capacity of 15,000 seats, fitted with retractable roof.

Until the tennis stadium will be reconditioned, the US Open organizers will build a temporary stadium meant to host the next edition of the competition.

It seems that the American engineers found a solution in order to not compromise the safety and the structure of the arena.

The estimated cost of the work is  $100 million. However, the amount is less significant than the initial estimation, which reached the double.

The roof will be supported by eight steel pillars and will take about 5-7 minutes to close. The designer will be the same that made the plans for the construction of the stadium.
