Moldavia chose as president a pro-Russian politician who threatened to stop the cooperation with the EU.

According to the Electoral Commission of Moldavia Igor Dodon, whose campaign has promoted closer ties with Moscow, gained 55.4% of the votes from 96% of the election ballots.

The new head of state Mr. Dodon could strengthen Moscow’s position in Eastern Europe, amid a wave of support shown to the Eurosceptics. Igor Dodon news of victory arrived all the way to Bulgaria, where people had elected as president a candidate of Russian origin, thereby causing the resignation of Prime Minister.

The polls were published just days after the victory of Donald Trump and raised questions regarding the US government’s support for the countries of Central and Eastern Europe, against pressure from Moscow.

Moldavia is the poorest country in Europe and is located in the conflict area between the EU and Russia. Area where both Russia and the world organizations have spent the last decade battling for influence.

Located between Ukraine and Romania, the former Soviet republic includes the separatist region of Transnistria. For years residents of the region have asked the Russian government to annex them, but without success.

Just like the former Soviet states Ukraine and Georgia, Moldova signed a political agreement with the EU Association. This political agreement is based largely on financial support from the West.

The scandal involving the pro-Brussels was generated by a group of politicians who ‘facilitated’ the theft of one billion euros deposited in one of the Moldovan state banks. The incident occurred in 2014 and the amount represents 12% of the national budget of Moldova. The scandal caused a great part of the population to express its support for pro-Russian parties.
