The Prime Minister position will be eliminated if the transition to a presidential system occurs, regarding the proposals to modify the Constitution, declared Veysek Eroglu, the Minister of Forests and Waters, as the website of the TV channel France 24 informs.

′In general, there is a president and with him probably stands a vice, as in the United States. We could still have a vice′, said Eroglu Veysek.

Erdogan was elected president of Turkey in 2014, having previously served as prime minister for over a decade.

The ruling AK party needs 330 votes out of 550 of Parliament from Ankara to call a referendum that shall allow Turkey’s population to express their opinions about the project amendment to modify the Constitution.

Eroglu also indicated that the new system should make a clearer separation of the legislative and executive power.

Veysek Eroglu also said that the presidential and legislative elections might take place in 2019.

President Recep Erdogan will be able to govern Turkey until 2029 and will have extensive executive powers, regarding the proposed amendments to the Constitution submitted by MPs of the ruling AK Party, as the Turkish officials told Reuters.

Erdogan and his supporters argue that Turkey needs strong leadership provided by a presidential executive system, similar to the United States or France, in order to avoid fragile government coalitions that have hindered the development of the country.

On the other hand, the opponents of Erdogan said that changing the constitution could lead to increased authoritarianism in a country that is already criticized for its problems regarding respecting human rights and freedoms, particularly as a result of purges after the attempted coup in July.
