At least 110 people are missing in the shipwreck on Wednesday of a craft that held 140 migrants and refugees coming from Libya announced on Thursday Carlotta Sami, a spokeswoman of the High Commissioner for Refugees in Rome, quoted by AFP.

Only 29 people were rescued on Wednesday night by the Italian coastguard and only 12 bodies had been recovered, a UNHCR official said.

Sami said that on Wednesday there were two shipwrecks coming from Libya, who had a number of 239 people that died, said BBC and The Guardian. The information comes from two survivors that were brought to shore by the Italian coast guard on the island of Lampedusa.

Over 4,200 people are trying to reach Europe and died in the Mediterranean in 2016, a record number in the recent years, said an IOM spokesman, Leonard Doyle.

UN agencies managing the crisis on migration and other humanitarian organizations have warned that crossing the Mediterranean from Libya to Italy, already more dangerous than the trip from Turkey to Greece, has become more problematic because traffickers are using boats which are increasingly insecure and most often overloaded.

In 2014, 3.8 million people in total have arrived in one of the Member States of the EU-28 and, according to reports, at least 2.8 million emigrants left an EU Member State. These totals do not represent the migration flows to / from the EU as a whole since they also include flows between the different EU Member States.

Of the 3.8 million immigrants registered in 2014, an estimated 1.6 million were citizens of third countries, 1.3 million were citizens of another EU member state than the destination, about 870 thousand were citizens of the EU Member State of destination (eg nationals ‘returning home’ or nationals born abroad) and about 12 400 were stateless.
