Former star of AC Milan becomes the new mayor of Georgia’s Capital, Tbilisi

Former Georgian football player Kaha Kaladze was elected as the new mayor of Tbilisi, according to the final results announced on Sunday.


The 39-year-old former football star has obtained no less than 51,06% of the total votes, defeating experienced politicians such as the independent Aleksandre Elisaşvili and European deputy Elena Hosteria.


Kaladze was part of the AC Milan team, between 2001-2010, and during his career at the Italian football club, he won the Champions League twice.

He has evolved throughout his career for Dinamo Tbilisi, Dinamo Kiev, and Genoa.


Kaladze was also a member of Georgia’s national team between 1993 and 2011, playing a total of 83 matches as one of the representatives of the national team.


He has five national titles and four national Cups won with Dinamo Tbilisi, three titles in Ukraine and one winning cup with Dinamo Kiev.


He won eight trophies with AC Milan: Series A, the Italian Cup, Italian Super Cup, Champions League twice, The European Super Cup twice and the World Club Championships.


Between 2001 and 2011, Kaladze was named five times the Georgian football player of the year.


In 2012, Kakha Kaladze withdrew from the football scene and entered into politics.


In October 2012 he became Energy Minister and Deputy Prime Minister, resigning in July 2017 to run for Tbilisi City Hall.
