Angela Merkel acknowledged that both Germany and the European Union made mistakes over the refugees in the crisis management.

“There are political issues that occur, but which are not realized as such at the moment and in Germany we ignored the problem for too long, but we also locked the need to find a pan-European solution,” said Merkel in an interview that was published in Wednesday’s edition of the daily Süddeutsche Zeitung.

The chancellor added that Germany and the European Union should show patience and strength in managing the situation of the refugees.

Merkel also said that Germany, which received most of the one million refugees in the Middle East and Asia who arrived in the EU last year, left Spain and other countries from the EU border to handle the refugees themselves.

“At that time I also rejected the proportional distribution of refugees,” she said.

Merkel said Berlin did not support models such as the European Defence Agency borders (Frontex) which infringe the sovereignty of the Member States.

“We have said that we will deal with this issue at our airports since we have no EU external border. But this does not work,” the German leader completed.

The chancellor has landed that the refugee problem will be a long term one. She also Angstated that she did not address the issue in an appropriate manner and that this is true as well with the protection of the external borders of the Schengen area.

Merkel also said the EU should improve the cooperation and will substantially increase the aid to developing states in Africa, but also for Turkey and other countries in problem areas.
