Alexander Shchetinin is best-known as Vladimir Putin’s most prominent critic.

In 2014, the Russian journalist left his native Russia in order to move to Kiev.

Shchetinin was found dead with a gun near his body after a group friends came to visit him on his birthday.

According to the authorities, Alexander was shot in the head and died a few hours before his friends came in.

“In the early hours of August 28, 2016, journalist Alexander Shchetinin was found dead in his apartment at Kostiantynivska Street. Alexander was found on the balcony by his friends, who came to congratulate him on his birthday,” the Kyiv Operating news portal wrote on Facebook.

The investigators believe that he killed himself because the door was locked. He also sent an email to his family and closest friends in which he announced that he is planning to commit suicide.

In many interviews, Alexander claimed that the Russian president is his “personal enemy”.

Although his death is unusual, the Ukrainian authorities are continuing to investigate the circumstances of Shchetinin’s death.

“Until we establish some facts, the first lead is the homicide. We are also considering suicide and the links surrounding his professional activity”, said the head of Kiev Police Department.

Shchtenin founded the Novy Region press agency in 1988.

He worked as an editor in chief for more than 17 years but decided to retire in 2014 because the editorial office faced pressure in Moscow.

Following the tensions between Russia and Ukraine, he decided to move to Kiev and start a press agency with the exact same name.

Of disconcert are claimed that Alexander Shchetinin’s shooting death may have been the result of the reporter having been critical of Russia’s Vladimir Putin.
