US Olympians Patrick Reed and Rickie Fowler are focused on winning another Ryder Cup in the last round of New York’s The Barclays. Fowler currently is working with a 1-stroke lead over his partner as the third round in the first event plays out. This is the first of a four-round series that makes up the PGA Tour’s much-anticipated FedEx Cup and its playoffs.

Fowler extended his bogey-free play to 45-holes by sinking a 4-foot birdie at the last hole. This allowed him to progress with a 3-under at the Farmingdale location Bethpage Black course. He had initially posted a 9-under 204 complete total while the overnight leading player Reed managed to card a 71 to make it to second place. Adam Scott, a player from Australia, lost his footing on 7-under after his putting put him at the lowest round of the tournament. Scott also got some help when he holed out within an eagle that was 95 yards at his first hole.

Reed and Fowler are also pushing for the Ryder Cup selection. Their top eight on the list after the final rounds made them an automatic shoe-in for the face-off against Europe in just five weeks. Fowler is sitting at the fourth spot while Reed is currently in eighth.

Most likely Fowler will need to finish top-three to solidify his spot. He stated confidently that it should be relatively “simple” for him. And he also stated that he is looking forward to the challenge. Despite his confidence, Fowler’s game has suffered a bit throughout this week.

Reed battled also throughout the front nine but performed well enough to stay in the top contention. He finished in a tie for an eleventh place right behind Briton Justin Rose. Fowler was put back into a tie position for the thirty-seventh place.
