Nicotine in cigarettes, even in the electronic ones, may contribute to heart disease, says a new study.

Nicotine can cause damage to heart cells. This extremely addictive substance is found in tobacco, and in vegetables such as eggplant or tomatoes (in a very small amount). Nicotine has a strong impact on the body: makes you feel good, cuts your appetite and stimulates memory. However, your heart rate quickens and the blood pressure increases.

Electronic Cigarettes satisfy the smoker’s nicotine addiction and “mimic” specific physical movements in smoking. E-ciggaretes were seen as a healthy alternative to regular cigarettes, especially because they do not contain cancer causing toxins as cigarettes do.

Previous studies have suggested that electronic cigarettes may be more effective than patches or nicotine gum for those who want to quit smoking.

“If nicotine could be provided in an acceptable and effective form, can save millions of lives,” concludes in 2007 the Royal College of Physicians of London, UK.

But nicotine in electronic cigarettes is bad for the heart.

The researchers exposed heart cells to nicotine. After only six hours, they formed a kind of “screw” cellular that “dig” through the tissue. When this happens in vascular smooth muscle cells, which are the middle layer of the arterial wall, atherosclerotic deposits arise that lead to atherosclerosis. Shortly, this means that nicotine acts as “a kind of cancer of the blood vessels” having a “screw penetrating through a wall” effect, says Chi Ming Hai, Professor of Molecular Pharmacology at Brown University, USA. It also means that the nicotine in electronic cigarettes can reduce the risk of lung cancer, but it increases as bad as smoking, that of heart disease.
