The number of foreign tourists visiting Spain grew by over 10% in the first seven months of this year compared to the same period last year, while the country profits from falls in the tourism sector of other countries following acts of terrorism, writes the Financial Times.

Spain received 42.4 million tourists from early this year until July, 11.1% more than in the same period last year. The British were the largest group of visitors, the number advancing by 15.3% to 10.1 million, even higher increases being recorded at visits to Ireland, Portugal and the rest of America (North and South America excluding the United States of America).

Travel groups, including TUI, the largest tour operator in the world, reported a growing demand for package holidays to Spain, while the customers try to avoid the unsafe political places and the terrorist threats in countries like Turkey, Tunisia, Egipt and France.

Spain is the second most popular country in terms of tourism in the world after France.

The most popular destinations are cities like Madrid and Barcelona, plus the cities of Córdoba, Seville, Granada and Malaga in Andalusia.

In other parts of the country, Toledo, Salamanca, and Santiago de Compostela are visited a lot as well. Spain is a popular summer destination, with Valencia, the Canary and the Balearic Islands where sandy beaches and beautiful resorts await.

Spain’s economy, as well as its population, is the fifth largest EU economy and in absolute terms is among the 10 largest economies in the world. In relative terms, it lost several positions in favor of more populated states. Its economic growth target, even if moderate, exceeds those of its neighbors and other European associates.
