Twitter Plans To Combat Harassment And Retain Users

Quite a number of celebrities and other users have been seen leaving the famous social networking platform – Twitter (TWTR) – very recently due to allegations of harassment. The company has heavily been criticized for its inability to effectively protect its users from abusive posts.

On Friday, Bloomberg Markets reported that Twitter is presently working out a way to keep its users by combating the bullying. According to the report, the company is looking to work on a keyword-based tool that would help to keep users out from seeing derogatory posts and provide them with the opportunity to filter certain posts.

As part of its efforts to battle online bullies, Twitter is working to provide users with the ability to block certain keywords like derogatory sexist words or racial slurs with this tool in their feed. To this effect, Twitter users will be able to tune out anyone who they think may be proactively harassing them.

The epidemic of abuse and harassment which has led many people away from the site has been a serious challenge for Twitter CEO Jack Dorsey, however, as a matter of priority, this recent development would make a big achievement on his quest for a technical solution.

According to Sara Frier – one of the first reporters on the story for Bloomberg, the company publicly gets a negative reputation, whenever celebrities leave for reasons of abuse which in most cases raises concerns about the company’s role in combating it. But until now, Twitter hasn’t really done much.

While Twitter is seeking to crack down on at least controversial posts, it is also looking to protect its bottom line, said BloombergTV anchor David Gura. These are the two main reasons why the company is taking initiative on this.
