WikiLeaks announced on Monday they have published an archive of over 21.000 emails obtained from the French President Emmanuel Macron’s political allies, writes Reuters.
The stolen data originally appeared on the internet in May, days before the French presidential race as an attempt to undermine the voters’ confidence.
Within hours of data leakage, Macron’s team claimed that he has become the target of a “massive and well-coordinated” hacking operation.
The information didn’t have any influence on the election, especially after the country’s electoral commission warned that republishing any details regarding those emails before the election it’s a crime.
The cyber- attack was compared to the before the US presidential race when Russia allegedly intervened in order to help President Donald Trump.
Macron’s team also accused the Russian government of attempting to interfere in his political campaign.
At that time, WikiLeaks did not publish Macron’s emails but promised to do so after verifying their authenticity.
However, WikiLeaks refused to reveal how the emails were obtained
21,075 verified emails were published by WikiLeaks so far along with 26,506 attachments.
Emails were sent over a period of eight years between March 2009 and April 2017.
