“Demos el primer paso” is a mix between rap and pop beats and also a tribute to world peace

The hymn has recently become the first international anthem dedicated to Pope Francis’ visit to Colombia, set to occur in September.

The song was selected on Wednesday to become the song playing in the background during the Pontiff Sovereign’s official visits, one of the world’s most important promoters when it comes to the historic peace agreement signed in November by the Colombian government and the rebels.

“The Pope’s visit already has a hymn. The Musicos Catolicos Unidos (Unique Catholic Musicians) and their song Demos el primer paso are winners of the CantaleAlPapa (Song for the Pope)”, has revealed the organizing committee of the competition.

The group, a religious brotherhood founded in Bogota in 2016, whose song was composed by Carlos Corvacho, performed the song alongside another 464 projects submitted in the same contest.

“You bring us light, you bring us peace, you bring us the word of truth, and our people will find their freedom in God”, suggests the chorus of the song chosen by a jury composed of four artists and two priests.

The music, performed by more than 20 artists, including priests, is inspired by Colombia traditional rhythms, in accordion sound, guitars, and drums, and includes a rap stanza.

“Our joy is complete and absolute, especially as we sing it to Christ’s vicar on Earth,” one of the soloists, Ana Bolivar, told AFP.

The Pope, who will arrive in Colombia on September 6 and returns to Rome on September 11, will visit Bogota, Villavicencio, Medellin, and Cartagena.

This is Pope Francis’ third visit to South America since he left this continent to take over Peter’s seat.

The first official trip occurred in July 2013, when he was in Rio de Janeiro for the World Youth Day. Then in July 2015, he made a tour which included Bolivia, Ecuador, and Paraguay. In August 2016, the Colombian government and the largest rebel group in the country, the Colombian Revolutionary Armed Forces (FARC), reached an agreement after four years of negotiations.
