This is how the next step Turkey is going to take towards dictatorship looks like!
President Recep Tayyip Erdogan decided that next month, the Turkish citizens will attend a referendum . April 16 is the date when all the voters will take part of this so-called democratic act.
In spite of the appearances, this referendum might not be as democratic as thought. Through this, a series of constitutional changes will occur and Erdogan will finally establish his autocracy.
It took a lot of time for the Government to convince the Parliament to give its vote for this referendum.
The pressure the state is putting on its citizens now that they prepare to vote is huge. If this referendum passes, Turkey will see the authoritarian regime of Erdogan.
The democracy that existed until now, based on the multi-party system, will be completely changed. The position of Prime Minister will no longer exist and the freedom that was, somehow, present, will vanish.
Principles existent in the republic, such as the neutrality of the president, will be changed. After this referendum, the president will be given the power to remove ministers and even control the judiciary system.
President Erdogan has been endangering the democratic institutions for a long time, but everything knew a downfall last summer, when the whole state was put under the martial law.
Since then, people have known fear, many lost their jobs, while others lost properties, passports and assets.
Intimidation and even harassment are wielded against citizens, journalists, intellectuals and politicians.
For all of these and more to be avoided, a worldwide movement needs to take place so that the Turkish voters will awaken and acknowledge what is really happening. It is incredibly important that this vote is going to be a fair and and free one.
If the referendum passes, then the republic that existed for so many years will come to an end.
