Eurovision is currently at war with Ukraine for a Russian singer. The organizers of the contest threatened the country that it would get banned from future contests.
This year, Ukraine is the country that is going to host the big finale, so the ban is a big deal.
What made Eurovision take this decision is the country’s refusal to let a singer from Russia enter their border. They keep refusing to let the singer on their territory and if they maintain this attitude, then it’s going to end bad for them.
The contestant’s name is Yuliya Samoilova and has been banned from Ukraine for three years. Apparently, the singer entered in an illegal way Crimea, the area that is annexed by Russia, to perform.
Actually, behind this story is the fact that Ukraine still refuses to think of Crimea as Russian territory, they still believe that it belongs to them. Russia annexed the area in 2014, but Ukraine contests that.
The leader of the European Broadcasting Union has fought back against Ukraine and thinks that it is unacceptable to ban the singer, especially since she is trapped in a wheelchair from a young age.
The Ukrainian Prime Minister received the letter from the leader that says that they are going to be banned.
In the letter, the leader added that this is making them angry as they use this competition as a tool in their confrontation that has been going on for so long.
This will also ruin their reputation as a democratic state.
Eurovision came with an alternate idea: to transmit her performance in the finale via satellite, but Russia rejected the offer immediately.
