The scandal around the professional swimmer Ryan Lochte goes further on, four of his sponsors already announcing their withdrawal. One of them is the swimming suits manufacturer Speedo and the other is the well-known brand, Ralph Lauren. The two big sponsors were followed by other two, Syneron-Candela, a skin care company and Airwave, a mattress making firm. All of this comes after the swimmer lied about being robbed and threatened with a gun.
The biggest sponsor of the four that will end their contract with Lochte, specified that this kind of behavior in unacceptable and that they will not condone it, for it is against their values. Lochte said that he thanks the company and that he respects their decision.
Some of Lochte’s images from Ralph Lauren’s website were already deleted, the company declaring that the sponsorship will not be renewed and that it was only for the Rio Olympics. Both Ralph Lauren and Airwave declared they will continue supporting the US Paralympic and Olympic teams.
Syneron-Candela said: “We hold our employees to high standards, and we expect the same of our business partners.”
An amount of $50 000 out of Lochte’s sponsorship money from Speedo will be donated to the Children’s Brazilian operations charity.
After estimates, the swimmer is thought to have earned around $2 million in 2012’s Olympics, from sponsors like Nissan, Gatorade, AT&T, and Gilette. Although his performance in this year’s Olympics was not as good as 2012 one, estimates say still he earned an amount of around $1m-$2m.
Although he is now being punished for his mistake, he is one of the best swimmers in history, with a number of 12 golden medals. At some point, he even had his own reality show in the United States.
