Apple made a new tech purchase recently by buying Gliimpse. It isn’t odd for the company to purchase smaller entities—they do it all the time. What is unique about this purchase is its purpose. Gliimpse has a product that collates information in the medical field into laymen’s terms for the patient. The company’s website described their service as a machine that takes in incomprehensible medical data and test results and converts them into standardized and understandable terminology.
The interesting thing is that Gliimpse is indicative of Apple’s long-term plans. They seem to be systematically moving into the health market with products like this. For example, their WatchOS 3 software is being released this fall. It will have the ability to coach wearers through various breathing techniques. A new Apple Watch is also being released in fall and it is said to have a GPS built in for tracking runners’ paths. Both products are being released this year as a rush to get the word out on Apple’s interest and expertise in helping people track their health.
Apple also did market research recently and found out that people like having the ability to track their own health and fitness levels. It is a convenience that they enjoy having on their wrists or as the handy app on their devices.
With two big releases already slated and a new purchase of Gliimpse, it is clear the direction that Apple is headed in. It also has its own platform called HealthKit, a health information app that some medical companies have already integrated into their business models. The iPhone automatically is armed with an app entitled Health. This is an app that also helps track health and fitness. Yet another sign that Apple is headed towards the health industry.
